Using Hashtags Effectively on Instagram
Hashtag strategy has changed significantly — here's what actually helps reach in the current algorithm.
Table of contents
Choosing the Right Mix
Combine a few broad, high-volume hashtags with several more specific, niche ones — broad tags face more competition for visibility, while niche tags (a specific service plus a local area, for instance) face less competition and often reach a more relevant, higher-intent audience.
How Many Is Actually Effective
Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post, but current best practice favors a smaller, well-researched set (often 3-8) over maxing out the limit — a large, generic hashtag block can actually read as spammy to both the algorithm and real users.
Researching What Actually Works for Your Audience
Review which hashtags your genuinely relevant local competitors and industry peers use, and test different combinations over time, tracking which posts using which tags actually reached more non-follower accounts (visible in Instagram's native insights).
