Why Push Notifications Are a High-Leverage, High-Risk Feature

A well-timed, relevant push notification can bring a user back to the app at exactly the right moment — but excessive or irrelevant notifications are one of the most common reasons users disable notifications entirely or uninstall an app altogether.

What Makes a Notification Worth Sending

A notification should deliver genuine, timely value to the specific recipient — an appointment reminder, an order status update, a relevant offer based on past behavior — rather than generic, frequent promotional pushes sent to the entire user base indiscriminately.

Respecting Frequency and User Preference

Giving users granular control over which notification types they receive, and respecting a reasonable overall frequency cap, keeps notifications a valued feature rather than an annoyance — over-notifying is the single most common cause of both notification opt-outs and app abandonment.

Measuring Notification Performance

Track open rate and, more importantly, the actual action taken after opening — a notification with a high open rate but no meaningful follow-through action isn't actually driving the engagement it appears to on the surface.
