How to Analyze Why Your Local Competitors Outrank You — Appcly guide
Table of contents

Start With Who's Actually in the 3-Pack

Search your core service terms exactly as a customer would — including from a few different locations within your service area, since results genuinely shift by searcher location — and note who consistently appears in the map pack. These are your real local SEO competitors, who may be different from the businesses you consider your competitors in a broader sense.

What to Compare

Review count and average rating are the most visible gap, but look deeper: how quickly do they respond to reviews, how complete and active is their Google Business Profile, and how specific and locally-relevant is their website content compared to yours. A competitor with fewer reviews but a more complete, actively-managed profile can still outrank a business with more reviews and a neglected one.

Turning Analysis Into Action

The goal isn't to copy a competitor's exact tactics — it's to identify the gap between what they're doing well and what you're doing, then prioritize closing the highest-impact gaps first (usually review response rate and profile completeness, since both are fully within your control and don't require months to build).
