Choosing Between Shopify and WooCommerce — Appcly guide

The Core Tradeoff Between the Two

Shopify is a fully hosted, managed platform — less technical setup, predictable monthly cost, less flexibility. WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin — more flexibility and control, but requires managing hosting, security, and updates yourself (or through a developer).

When Shopify Is the Better Fit

Shopify suits businesses that want to launch quickly, don't have in-house technical resources, and value predictable costs and managed security over maximum customization — most of the complexity is abstracted away.

When WooCommerce Is the Better Fit

WooCommerce suits businesses with existing WordPress expertise, a need for deep customization beyond what Shopify's app ecosystem easily provides, or a preference for owning their hosting and data rather than depending on a single platform vendor.

Cost Considerations Beyond the Sticker Price

Shopify's monthly fee is predictable but apps and premium themes add up; WooCommerce's software is free but hosting, security, and developer time for customization carry real costs — total cost of ownership often ends up more comparable between the two than the headline pricing suggests.
