Inconsistent NAP Information

A business name, address, or phone number that doesn't match exactly across your GBP, website, and citations is one of the most common and most damaging mistakes — it undermines the trust signal Google relies on to confirm your listing is accurate, even when every individual piece of information is technically correct somewhere.

Keyword-Stuffed Business Names

Adding extra keywords to your business name field ("Smith Plumbing - Best Emergency Plumber Round Rock") violates Google's guidelines directly and is a common cause of suspension or ranking suppression — your business name field should contain your actual, real-world business name only.

Wrong or Overly Broad Category Selection

A generic or slightly mismatched primary category silently limits which searches you're eligible to appear for — see our category selection guide for how to audit and correct this.

Neglect: The Most Common Mistake of All

More than any single specific error, an abandoned profile — stale photos, no recent posts, unanswered reviews and questions — is the most common reason a technically well-set-up listing underperforms. Most of the mistakes covered across our other GBP guides are ultimately variations of the same root cause: a profile set up once and never actively maintained.
